Ellis explicitly dates Letters 400 and 403 as 1708. Conceivably, Ellis
misread "1700" on those letters as "1708". Ellis gives no date for
Letter 401, but the letter refers to Prince George of Denmark as holding
the office of Lord High Admiral, which he assumed in 1702 and held until
1708. A date of 1702 for Letter 401 is the only one that is consistent
with Prince George's tenure as well as the year of Spencer's death. For
simplicity, we assume a date of 1702 for the other two letters as well.
